Best for

Value and blink strategies

ETB is shorthand for “enters the battlefield,” the trigger condition on abilities that happen automatically the moment a permanent comes into play.

Players use it constantly in conversation and deck discussion, saying a creature “has a strong ETB” to mean its entry trigger alone is worth the card, separate from its stats or abilities while it stays in play.

Why ETB Value Matters

An ETB effect fires the instant the permanent arrives, so it still resolves even if the creature is immediately removed afterwards. This makes ETB creatures resilient against removal-heavy decks, and it’s a major reason strong ETB creatures are prized in both constructed and limited environments.

Blinking and Repeating ETB Triggers

Effects that exile and return a permanent, often called blink or flicker effects, let players trigger a strong ETB ability again without needing a second copy of the card. Building a deck around a handful of powerful ETB creatures alongside blink effects is a well known Arena archetype for generating repeated value.

Strategic tip

When facing removal, prioritise casting your strongest ETB creatures onto the battlefield even if you expect them to die soon, since the value is already banked the moment they enter.
