The Stack
Core rules concept · Governs spells and abilities · Applies to all formats
The stack is the part of the game where spells and abilities wait before they take effect. When something new is added, it goes on top and resolves before anything underneath it.
That order is last in, first out. The most recent spell or ability resolves first, then the one below it, and so on until the stack is empty.
How the Stack Works
Casting a spell puts it on the stack rather than making it happen straight away. This gives your opponent a chance to respond by adding their own spell or ability on top.
Abilities that trigger or that you activate also use the stack. Playing a land does not, which is why you cannot respond to a land drop.
The Stack on MTG Arena
Arena shows the stack on screen, so you can see each item waiting to resolve. The client also passes the chance to respond automatically in many situations, which hides some of the timing you would handle by hand in paper.
That convenience is worth learning to control. Stops and settings let you pause at the moments where a response matters.
Why It Matters Strategically
Most interaction in Magic is about the stack. Counterspells, combat tricks, and removal all work by responding to something already waiting there.
Understanding the order also stops you making common mistakes, like expecting your spell to resolve before your opponent’s response.
Strategic tip
Before you cast a key spell, ask what your opponent could add on top of it and how that would resolve. If a response would ruin your play, wait until they have used their mana or cast the spell with protection ready.
