Mana fixing is the set of cards and effects that help you produce the right colours of mana at the right time. It matters in any deck that plays more than one colour.

Fixing is different from your land count. A deck can have plenty of lands and still fail to cast its spells because the lands make the wrong colours.

Common Types of Fixing

The main sources are dual lands, fetch lands, mana rocks that produce several colours, and spells that search for basic lands. Some cards also make mana of any colour, which is the most flexible kind of fixing.

Each type has a cost. Lands that enter tapped slow you down, rocks take a turn to cast, and searching spells use up a card.

Fixing and Your Mana Base

Your mana base is where fixing lives. A two-colour deck often needs only a few dual lands, while a three-colour deck or a deck that splashes needs far more help.

The more colours you add, the more your deck depends on fixing and the more it risks stumbling on a hand full of the wrong lands.

Strategic tip

Write out the coloured mana symbols in your deck and count them by colour before choosing lands. Give the colour you need earliest the most sources, and add fixing until you can cast your key early spell on time in most games.
