Arena-Exclusive Cards
Arena-only card pool · Legal in Alchemy and Historic · Not available in tabletop Magic
Arena-exclusive cards are Magic cards that exist only on MTG Arena and have no tabletop equivalent. They are designed specifically for the digital platform, released through Alchemy expansion sets that drop between major Standard set releases. These cards are legal in Alchemy and Historic — and by extension Historic Brawl — but cannot be played in Standard, Pioneer, Explorer, or any tabletop format.
Arena-exclusive cards often feature mechanics that would be difficult or impossible to implement in physical card form — abilities that involve randomised drafting from a digital pool, creating tokens with effects selected from a list at random, or conjuring cards that don’t physically exist in any printed set. The digital medium gives designers latitude that tabletop Magic simply can’t match.
How Arena-Exclusive Cards Enter the Game
Alchemy sets launch periodically alongside or between Standard sets, adding a batch of new Arena-exclusive cards to the pool. These sets are smaller than full Standard releases and are primarily aimed at Alchemy and Historic players. They appear in their own booster packs on Arena and can be opened through pack purchases or earned through events.
Like rebalanced cards, Arena-exclusive cards carry an “A-” prefix in their name to distinguish them from cards with tabletop equivalents. If you’re building a deck list from an online source, that prefix is a quick signal that the card exists only on Arena and won’t translate to tabletop play.
Digital-Only Mechanics
The mechanics found on Arena-exclusive cards often lean into what the digital client can handle automatically. Spellbook abilities let a card draft a random selection from a specific list of spells. Perpetual effects permanently alter a card’s stats for the rest of the game, even if it changes zones. Seek puts a random card matching certain criteria from your library into your hand without revealing it to your opponent.
These mechanics introduce a layer of randomness and variance that some players enjoy and others find frustrating. If you prefer deterministic gameplay where you always know exactly what your deck does, Alchemy may not be the format for you — but if you like the unpredictability, Arena-exclusive cards open up some genuinely unusual play patterns that don’t exist anywhere else in the game.
Arena-Exclusive Cards and Wildcards
Arena-exclusive cards can be crafted using wildcards of the appropriate rarity, just like any other card on the platform. They can’t be obtained through tabletop purchases or transferred in from any other source — the only way to get them is through Arena’s own economy. If you’re playing Historic Brawl and want to build around a powerful Arena-exclusive legendary creature, budgeting wildcards accordingly is worth thinking through before you start.
Strategic tip
If you primarily play Standard or Explorer, Arena-exclusive cards are easy to ignore entirely — they won’t appear in those formats and you don’t need them. But if you’re building toward Historic or Historic Brawl, checking whether any top-tier decks rely on Alchemy-exclusive pieces is worth doing before you finalise your wildcard plan.
