Board
Game state shorthand · In-play permanents · Community term
Board is shorthand for everything currently in play, meaning the creatures, lands, and other permanents both players control at any given moment.
Saying a player “has the board” or that “the board is stalled” is a quicker way of describing the same idea covered by the more formal term board state, and the two are used interchangeably in most Arena conversations.
Reading the Board
Learning to read the board means constantly reassessing who is ahead based on creature power, available mana, and cards in hand rather than life totals alone. A player at 5 life with a dominant board and a hand full of removal is often favoured over an opponent at 20 life with an empty board.
Board Wipes and Board Presence
A board wipe clears most or all permanents in play, usually to reset a losing position, while board presence describes how much pressure a player’s permanents are applying. Control decks aim to survive until they can safely deploy a board wipe, while aggressive decks try to build overwhelming board presence before one arrives.
Strategic tip
Before committing your whole hand to the board, ask whether a single sweeper would undo everything you just played. Against known control decks, spread threats out over multiple turns instead of dumping your hand at once.
