Build-arounds are cards powerful or unusual enough that a whole deck gets constructed specifically to support them, rather than the card just slotting into an existing shell. They’re usually too narrow or too demanding to fit a generic deck, so they only work once you’ve stacked the rest of the seventy-five around their needs.

Commander generals are the most obvious example, the whole deck exists to enable that one legendary creature, but Standard and Pioneer brewers use the term the same way for a single card that defines an entire archetype.

Spotting a Good Build-around

The best build-arounds reward a specific kind of deck so heavily that the payoff outweighs the cost of warping your list around it, a card that doubles your token production is only exciting if you’re already planning to make a lot of tokens. Weak build-arounds ask for too much support and give back too little once you’ve paid that cost.

Set previews and spoiler season are full of “build-around” chatter because these are exactly the cards that create new archetypes rather than slotting into decks that already exist.

Build-arounds vs Goodstuff Cards

A goodstuff card is strong in almost any deck of its colour, efficient removal or a flexible threat, and needs no support to perform. A build-around is the opposite, it might do very little on its own but becomes the best card in the deck once you’ve assembled the synergy pieces around it.

Brewers chase build-arounds because they’re what makes a deck feel distinct rather than a pile of the format’s best individual cards, even when the resulting deck is objectively weaker than a goodstuff pile.

Strategic tip

Before committing to a build-around, count how many actual support pieces exist for it in the current card pool; if you can’t find ten to fifteen cards that meaningfully synergise with it, the deck likely underperforms a generic list in the same colours.
