Drafting Signals
Draft-specific concept · Read between the picks · Colour signal reading
Drafting Signals are the clues your draft pod sends about which colours are open, based on what wheels back to you late and what dries up early. If strong cards in a colour keep coming back at picks eight or nine, nobody else at the table wants that colour, so it’s safe to move in. If a colour vanishes after pick three, several players are already fighting over it.
Reading signals well means spending less time forcing a plan that isn’t working and more time building around whatever the table is actually giving you.
How Drafting Signals Work
Every pack you pass carries information. A pack with three good black cards at pick six tells you black is thin at your table, since the players before you passed on all of it. A pack with nothing playable in your main colour by pick four tells you someone upstream is already committed to it.
The trick is separating a real signal from noise. One weak pack doesn’t mean much, but a pattern across several picks in a row is worth acting on.
Drafting Signals on MTG Arena vs Paper
In paper draft you can watch faces and hesitation around the table, which gives you extra information beyond the cards themselves. On MTG Arena, signals come from the cards alone, so pack contents matter even more.
Bot drafts and quick drafts on Arena also mix AI decisions in with human ones, which can make signals a little noisier than a live human table.
Why Drafting Signals Matter Strategically
Ignoring signals is how players end up fighting three other drafters for the same colour while an open lane sits untouched two seats away. Following signals usually means a smoother curve, more playables, and fewer awkward maindeck cuts on deck-building day.
Strategic tip
If your first two or three picks are strong but your colour keeps drying up by pick six or seven, don’t force it. Check what’s still flowing late in the pack and pivot there, even if it means abandoning an early bomb, because an open lane beats a contested one almost every time.
