Answerable before it’s assembled

A lock is a combination of cards or effects that, once assembled, prevents an opponent from meaningfully playing the game, whether that means stopping them from untapping, drawing, or casting spells at all. Individual cards that contribute to this kind of shutdown are called lock pieces.

How Locks Win Games

Once online, a lock often doesn’t need to attack at all. It simply stops the opponent from doing anything relevant while the rest of the deck’s plan finishes the game at its own pace.

Playing Against a Developing Lock

The best window to interact is before the final piece resolves. Once a lock is fully online, most decks don’t have enough remaining resources to fight through it.

Strategic tip

If you suspect an opponent is assembling a lock, prioritise disrupting the piece that isn’t resolved yet over racing with damage. A lock that’s already online is very hard to fight through afterwards.
