Grinding gold refers to the practice of consistently playing MTG Arena to earn gold through quests, weekly wins, and events. Gold is the primary in-game currency available to free-to-play players, and it’s used to buy booster packs, enter premium events, and build collection over time. Grinding gold isn’t a single action — it’s a daily and weekly habit.

The term “grinding” reflects that earning gold efficiently requires consistent, sometimes repetitive play rather than occasional sessions. A player who completes their daily quest and earns several weekly wins each day will dramatically out-earn one who plays occasional long sessions infrequently, even if the total number of games played is similar.

Weekly Wins and Gold Stacking

The weekly win reward track gives players additional gold and card rewards for their first fifteen wins of the week, with rewards increasing as you progress. The first few wins each day contribute to this track quickly, making a short daily session more efficient than a single weekly marathon. Gold doesn’t have a storage cap, so players who grind consistently and spend carefully can accumulate enough gold for a pack surge during new set releases.

Events also contribute to gold income — certain limited events pay out gold rewards based on win rate, and completing them effectively can add substantially to a player’s weekly gold haul. Draft events in particular can be gold-positive at high win rates, making them worth learning for players willing to invest in limited skills.

Spending Gold Strategically

Gold spent on packs from the wrong set is the most common way players undermine their grinding efforts. Buying packs from older sets that you already have most of means less wildcard value per pack due to the duplicate protection conversion rate being less favourable when your collection is fuller. Targeting packs from newer sets with cards you need keeps your gold efficient and maximises wildcard accumulation per pack opened.

Strategic tip

Save your gold stockpile in the weeks leading up to a new set release, then spend it on the new set’s packs on launch day. New sets contain cards you don’t own yet, meaning every pack opened is either a card you want or duplicate protection wildcard progress — both valuable, unlike opening the tenth copy of a card from an older set.
