7 Wonders stands as one of the greatest card drafting games ever created, combining simple turn mechanics with deep strategic decisions. Whether you’re teaching new players or looking to refine your own strategy, understanding the turn structure is essential.

Let’s break down exactly what happens during each turn of this award-winning game.

The Three Core Phases

Each turn in 7 Wonders follows the same structure throughout all three Ages. This consistency helps the game flow smoothly even with 7 players at the table.

1. Choose a Card

At the beginning of each turn, every player examines their hand of cards privately. You’ll select one card to play and place it face down in front of you.

This selection process is where much of the strategic thinking happens. You’re not just choosing what benefits you—you’re also considering what cards you’ll be passing to your opponents.

2. Take an Action (Simultaneously)

Once everyone has selected their card, all players reveal their choices at the same time. With your selected card, you must choose one of three possible actions:

Build the Structure

  • Pay the card’s cost in resources or coins
  • Add the card to your city tableau
  • Gain the card’s benefits immediately
  • Note: You cannot build duplicate structures with the same name

Build a Wonder Stage

  • Use your selected card as a construction marker
  • Pay the resource cost shown on your Wonder board
  • Place the card face down, partially tucked under your Wonder board
  • Gain the Wonder stage benefit immediately
  • Remember: Wonder stages must be built in order from left to right

Discard for Coins

  • Place the card face down in the discard pile
  • Collect 3 coins from the bank
  • This option is useful when you can’t afford to build, or when you want to deny a card to opponents

3. Pass Remaining Cards

After everyone has completed their action, you’ll pass your remaining hand of cards to a neighboring player. The direction changes with each Age:

  • Age I: Pass to the left (clockwise)
  • Age II: Pass to the right (counter-clockwise)
  • Age III: Back to the left (clockwise)

This changing direction creates different dynamics between you and your neighbors throughout the game, forcing you to adapt your strategy each Age.

Special Cases to Remember

Final Turn of Each Age On the sixth and final turn of each Age, you’ll receive only two cards. You’ll choose one to play as normal and discard the other without receiving the usual 3 coins.

Resource Management To build most cards and Wonder stages, you’ll need resources. These can come from:

  • Your own city’s production cards
  • Trading with your immediate neighbors (left and right only)
  • Special cards that provide resources or reduce costs

Why This Turn Structure Works

7 Wonders’ simultaneous play mechanism is brilliant for several reasons:

  • Speed – A full 7-player game can finish in 30 minutes
  • Engagement – Everyone is always involved with no downtime
  • Strategy depth – The drafting mechanism creates interesting decisions every turn
  • Interconnected play – Your decisions affect and are affected by your neighbors

Key Strategic Considerations

When deciding which card to select each turn, consider:

  1. What your city needs right now
  2. What would benefit your opponents if passed to them
  3. What your Wonder stage bonuses require
  4. What scoring strategies you’re pursuing
  5. How many turns remain in the current Age

By understanding these turn phases and implementing thoughtful strategy, you’ll find yourself making better decisions and scoring higher in your next 7 Wonders game.
